Galore: The Singles 1987–1997 (November 3, 1997)

This late 1997 release takes up where Standing on a Beach leaves off, beginning with “Why Can’t I Be You?” and continuing through the 1990s. It includes one newly recorded single: “Wrong Number.” Galore is a good source for the seven-inch mixes from the period, especially Mark Saunders’s excellent work on the Disintegration singles, which are sharper and more immediate than the album versions. The cover cleverly flips the motif of the old man on a beach, this time with an infant holding an ice cream cone.

Galore sold poorly despite containing material representing the Cure’s commercial pinnacle. It reached only number thirty-seven in the United Kingdom and number thirty-two in the United States, a grim reflection of the band’s diminished standing. The one bright spot was the single “Wrong Number,” a track first attempted with Mark Saunders during the sessions for “Never Enough.” Smith resurrected and drastically altered it with the help of guitarist Reeves Gabrels and producer Mark Plati, giving “Wrong Number” a vastly different sound than anything else the Cure has released. Its driving electrorhythm and heavily processed guitar is very much in line with Gabrels’s work on David Bowie’s Earthling released earlier in the year.

“Wrong Number” didn’t catch on in the United Kingdom, stalling at number sixty-two, but it was a hit on alternative radio in the United States, and it remains a regular part of the Cure’s live shows.
